GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's basketball team used a big third quarter on Thursday and it propelled them to a 74-57 win over Cornerstone. The Panthers outscored the Golden Eagles, 25-9, in the third quarter and turned a 31-28 halftime deficit into a 53-40 lead entering the fourth quarter. Davenport increased their lead to 17 points which happened with 26 seconds left in the game on a
Lillee Gustafson layup.
"I am super proud of the team for continuing to battle tonight and for fighting adversity all year long," said head coach
Travis Schuba. "We have yet to have our entire roster healthy for a game but this is truly a special group and I'm super happy for them to get their first win of the year. They deserve it and earned it tonight. Hopefully they see what it takes now and we can build on it into the new year."
In the first half, Davenport could not find their shooting touch going 9-for-35 and Cornerstone led for 17:46 of 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles led by as many as nine points with 5:52 left in the second quarter. The Panthers came out strong in the second half and opened with a 11-0 run to take a 39-31 lead with 6:58 left in the quarter. That lead grew to 13 points at 50-37 and again at 53-40 to end the quarter. DU shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) in the quarter and held Cornerstone to 3-of-14 from the floor with four turnovers.
Davenport set a new season-high with 74 points and 52 rebounds. Gustafson led the team with a career-high 15 boards and
Kenzie Wilkinson set a new career high with 10 rebounds.
Toni Grace led the team with 17 points and had three assists. It was the 63rd time in her career with double-digit points and seventh time this season.
Scout Nelson set a new career high with nine assists and also had six rebounds. Gustafson also got her second double-double with 10 points and blocked two shots.
Ajai Simmons added 11 points in 22 minutes. Both teams shot 37 percent for the game from the field and were 7-of-22 from the arc.
