GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team had one of their toughest defensive efforts of the young season against Wayne State on Thursday in the GLIAC opener. The Warriors used an 11-3 run to end the game and come away with the 58-50 victory. The game featured 10 ties and four lead changes and was tight for most of the night. The Warriors led for 14:41 of the game time and Davenport led for 16:31.
Davenport and Wayne State were tied at 39 heading into the fourth quarter and were also tied at 47 with 2:56 to play. The Warriors would then go on their run and scored six of those points at the free throw line. Wayne State shot 40.8 percent for the game and had their best quarter in the fourth going 6-of-9 from the floor. Davenport shot 29 percent including a best of 38.9 percent in the first quarter. The offense struggled to make shots in the final 10 minutes going 3-of-21 from the floor.
Scout Nelson led the team with 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first career double-double in 36 minutes.
Ajai Simmons added 10 points and four rebounds.
Toni Grace scored eight points but went 0-for-6 in the second half. Wayne State improved to 5-1, 1-0 while Davenport is now 0-5, 0-1. The team is back in action on Saturday at 1 PM against Saginaw Valley State.
