GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The opening weekend of women's basketball in the GLIAC concluded for the Panthers with a 68-39 loss against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. Davenport was looking for their first win of the season but the Cardinals came into the game hot and stayed that way with defense and sharp shooting from behind the arc. Davenport was held under 40 points for the first time since Jan. 18, 2020 on the road at Northwood and today the Cardinals went 11-of-24 from deep as five different players connected.
Saginaw Valley State led wire-to-wire in this one and led by as many as 38 points at the 7:41 mark in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals scored the first six points of the game and led 17-7 after one quarter. SVSU went 7-of-14 from the floor including 3-of-5 behind the arc. In the second quarter it was the exact same 7-of-14 from the floor for the Cardinals and they ended the first half going 7-of-13 from three-point land.
Despite being down through three quarters, the Panthers were able to outscore the Cardinals 13-11 in the fourth quarter. DU finished 12-of-53 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
Loni Sales led the team with eight points in 19 minutes.
