GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The GR Charity Classic got off to a good start for the Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team with a 7-5 win over Grand Valley State at Eagles Ice Center. The format took an interesting turn because originally the winner was going to play the winner of the second game between Calvin and Western Michigan. Eagles Ice Center had a problem at the rink and the second game could not be played. Therefore, the Panthers will now be playing the Lakers again tomorrow at 5:30 PM at Griff's Georgetown, the home rink for Grand Valley State. Today was the third meeting already between the teams which will square off four more times in the regular season.
The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the season series behind two goals each from
Zachary Currie and
Austin Thompson. Currie also had an assist in the contest which was very mild with just three minor penalties between both teams. All 12 goals were scored at even strength.
The Panthers trailed 3-0 after the first period before staging the comeback.
Sebastien Doucet scored the team's first goal after GVSU led 4-0 early in the second period.
Frederik Gildsig scored at 10:28 less than a minute after Doucet's goal to make it 4-2. The Lakers again increased their lead to three goals at 5-2 at the 14:47 mark but that would be their last goal. Davenport would scored the next five goals to take the win.
Thompson scored at 17:38 of the second period and again at 2:59 of the third to make it 5-4 and put the scare into the Lakers. Currie then scored the tying and winning goals back-to-back at 11:58 and 19:18.
Nathan Nickelson iced it with an empty-net goal with nine seconds to play.
Alexander Rogers allowed three goals on 12 shots in the first period and was replaced by
Nathan Gauthier. He fared much better stopping 29-of-31 shots in the final two periods.
