GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After starting off the season with a win over Aquinas last Saturday, the D1 hockey team looked to carry that momentum in the first of five meetings against the Calvin Knights at Patterson on Friday.

The Panthers started off strong, thanks to a great offensive performance from Jason Cohan. However, a dominant third period by the Knights helped them to the win on Friday night.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 3 – Calvin 6
Shots: DU 50| CU 51
Power Play: DU (1/5) | CU (1/4)
Records: DU (1-1) | CU (2-0)

NOTABLE PERFORMANCE

Jason Cohan led the Panthers with his first hat trick as a Panther. Despite picking up the loss, Zach Janis put in a solid outing in goal, making 44 stops on the night.

OUT IN FRONT

The contest started with both teams getting their chances, but DU's Zach Janis and Calvin's Darin Fox were able to come up with big saves in the opening period.

However, Davenport broke through late in the period, as Cohan ripped a shot by Fox to give DU a 1-0 lead.

In period two, Davenport came out flying, and after a couple of close calls, Matic Nastran found Cohan open, and he buried his second of the game to put the Panthers up by two just over minutes into the period.

BACK AND FORTH

While DU seemingly had the momentum, Calvin was able to kill off a 5-on-3 penalty kill, and were able to bring the score back to within one after Riley Robertson scored his first of the season late in the period.

Less than a minute in the third, Cohan jammed in his third of the game to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.

STORMING BACK

After the Cohan goal, the Knights flipped the ice, and found themselves back within one after Cal Erdmann found the back of the net. Just before the halfway mark of the period, the Knights were able to take advantage of a power play, as Robertson tapped in his second of the game to tie the game at three.

Two minutes later, while the Panthers were on the power play, Jared Virtanen scored on a breakaway, shorthanded, to give Calvin their first lead of the afternoon.

Then, just a couple of minutes apart, Calvin's returning leading scorers, Jacob Siebenga and Virtanen, scored to give the Knights three-goal lead.

WHO'S NEXT?

DU will travel just down the road to Eagles Ice Center to take on the Knights to wrap up the weekend set. Game time set for 5:30 p.m.
