Panthers tripped up by #23 Michigan Tech

Toni Grace led DU with 20 points (third straight 20-plus game)

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Davenport women's basketball began their weekend voyage to the Upper Peninsula with an 80-58 loss at 23rd-ranked Michigan Tech on Friday. The Panthers were coming off a two-game sweep of Lake Superior State at home, but the strong shooting and defense of the Huskies put a halt to their win streak.

The unsung hero for Michigan Tech came off the bench as Alex Rondorf scored a season-high 18 points and connected on all six of her three-point attempts. In fact, Rondorf just shot six field goals all game and those were all three-pointers. Rondorf was 11-of-30 behind the arc in her previous five games heading into the contest but caught fire in this one.

Davenport was led in scoring once again by Toni Grace. The reigning GLIAC South Player of the Week needed 18 field goal attempts but did finish with 20 points. She has now scored 20-plus in each of her last three games. Grace went 4-of-9 behind the arc and is 13-of-26 in her last three games. She connected on just 1-of-9 inside the arc and also did make 6-of-8 at the free throw line.

Emily Lange provided substance off the bench with a team-high eight rebounds and also chipped in seven points. Scout Nelson scored eight points and added three assists. Nelson was 4-of-6 from the floor and also had two rebounds. Michigan Tech did not trail in the contest and led by as many as 27 points early in the fourth quarter.

Davenport turned it over 19 times and that led to 26 points by the Huskies. Michigan Tech outscored DU 36-18 in the paint and got nearly half of their points from the bench (39-of-80). Davenport outscored MTU 20-17 in the second quarter and 16-15 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers shot 33.9 percent from the floor, which marked the fourth time this season they were 34 percent or under in a game as a team. The Huskies shot 42 percent from the floor and were 9-of-20 (45 percent) from the arc, which is much higher than their season average of 33.5 percent.
