Panthers can't get a split at Michigan Tech in 83-61 defeat

3 players were in double figures in scoring for Davenport

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team was trying to earn a split of weekend games at #23 Michigan Tech on Saturday. The Huskies used excellent shooting and tough defense to send the Panthers back home with an 83-61 loss. Davenport is now 4-9 overall this season while the Huskies remain in first place in the GLIAC with a 12-1 record. The Huskies have also won 10 straight games to date.

The Huskies got out to a 24-14 lead after the first quarter. Davenport actually scored the first five points on a Taylor Opolka lay-up and a Toni Grace three-pointer. Michigan Tech then went on a 8-0 run as it was capped by an Alex Rondorf lay-up. Loni Sales connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 8, but MTU scored the next seven points to lead 15-8 with 3:32 left in the first quarter. DU went 5-of-15 shooting in the quarter and Tech was red hot at 75 percent going 9-of-12.

In the second quarter, Davenport battled to get back into the game and closed within 37-30 at the 2:27 mark as Scout Nelson converted a three-pointer. Davenport trailed 45-37 at halftime as Grace made a jumper with eight seconds until intermission. The Panthers shot 57.1 percent in the quarter and were 4-of-5 behind the arc. 

Davenport trailed 58-50 with 4:04 left in the third quarter after Grace made a three-pointer to give her 16 points. The Huskies then pulled further ahead going on a 11-0 run to end the quarter and lead 69-50. In the fourth quarter, MTU scored first at 8:40 and led by at least 20 points for the rest of the contest.

Grace led the team with 16 points and went 4-of-7 behind the arc. She has scored in double figures in every game this season. Emily Lange added 10 points and four rebounds. Sales ended with 10 points and five rebounds.
