Panthers fall to Northern Michigan 62-43

Toni Grace led DU with 14 points and Taylor Opolka added 12 points

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The tables were turned on Saturday as the Davenport women's basketball team could not earn a weekend sweep of Northern Michigan in a 62-43 loss. Davenport got the 56-50 win yesterday but never led in this contest as the Wildcats were tenacious on the glass with a 43-23 edge in rebounding. 14 of those rebounds were offensive and the Wildcats converted those into 18 second-chance points.

The Panthers could not find their shooting touch this afternoon and started the game 0-of-8 from the floor. Northern Michigan led 8-0 at the media timeout of the first quarter and DU did not score a point until Taylor Opolka made a pair of free throws at the 4:32 mark. DU went 7-of-8 at the free throw line to keep the score 16-9 in favor of the Wildcats after the first quarter. The Panthers trailed 28-16 at the half and were just 4-of-24 shooting from the floor in the first half.

Northern Michigan increased their lead to 47-28 after three quarters and each team scored 15 points in the fourth quarter for the final of 62-43. Samantha Potter had 17 rebounds for the Wildcats, the most DU has given up to a single player this season. Makaylee Kuhn led NMU with 17 points after scoring 24 yesterday. Kuhn also had five assists and went 7-of-10 from the floor. Ana Rhude scored 13 points off the bench for the Wildcats and grabbed five rebounds.

Toni Grace led the Panthers with 14 points and scored seven points in each half. Grace led DU with four steals and also had three rebounds. Opolka had a season-high 12 points and was 3-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line. She scored in double figures for the second time this season.
