Panthers post first win during home opener against Quincy

Jordan Caskenette scored four goals for DU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was a glorious day for some lacrosse on a sunny afternoon at the DU Turf Field on Saturday. The Panthers picked up their first win of the season during their home opener against Quincy by a final score of 11-6.

Davenport (1-4) had a very strong first half and built a 6-0 lead at intermission. Jordan Caskenette scored three times in the first quarter to set the tone. James Johnston assisted on all three of those goals. Fernando Rodriguez scored the other goal in the first quarter from Adam Smellie as DU led 4-0 after 15 minutes.

The second quarter did not feature a lot of offense as DU scored at the 1:08 mark as Stephen Ochsenkehl made it 5-0 from Keagan King. The final goal of the half was from Keelan McKouen at the 30-second mark from King.

Davenport scored the first two goals of the third quarter to build an 8-0 advantage. Smellie notched a man-up goal at 12:49 and Rodriguez followed with his own man-up tally at 11:46 from Smellie. The Hawks (0-5) climbed back into it with four straight goals. Jayme Brain scored twice three minutes apart and then Jordan Ernst and Neal Dardis each scored a goal.

The teams traded goals the rest of the way as Caskenette scored his fourth goal at 8:54 of the fourth quarter and McKouen ended the scoring with 40 seconds remaining with Smellie getting another assist.

Davenport totaled 47 shots including 25 shots on goal. Quincy committed 29 turnovers and 12 of those were caused by the Panthers. Smellie finished with four assists on the day. Johnston finished with three assists. Connor Foster won seven face-offs. Daniel Milano had four groundballs and made 11 saves in net for Davenport.

"I was very proud of the hard work the team put in each day this week," said head coach Chris Esquivel. "They handled today's adversity with the right response. We all were very excited to have the opportunity to play at home and their hard work paid off against a tough Quincy team."
