GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a rough weekend, the Panthers looked to bounce back in the fourth game of the season against Calvin University. Despite the Panthers winning the first game at Eagles Ice Center earlier this season, the Knights had won the other two at Patterson.
The Knights swarmed in the Panther zone all night long, and it showed up on the scoreboard as Calvin was able to beat DU for the third time this season.
QUICK STATS
Final Score: Davenport 3 – Calvin 8
Shots: DU 30 | CU 50
Power Play: DU (0/4) | CU (2/4)
Records: DU (2-4) | CU (4-3)
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
While the Panthers offense struggled at times throughout the night, rookie
Jonathan Dubbink continued to produce, scoring twice in the contest. The former Grandville Bulldog leads the team with seven goals on the season.
HOME ICE ADVANTAGE
It took a little bit of time for either team to score, but when Nicholas Workman scored with a little over seven minutes to play in the first period, the flood gates opened for the home team. Not two minutes later, Justin Davis scored to put Calvin up by two. Shortly thereafter, Hayden Heys found the back of the net, and after only 20 minutes, DU found themselves trailing 3-0.
Things did not get much better in the second period, as Declan Curtis scored less than 30 seconds into the frame to put Calvin up by four. After Dubbink scored later in the period, Workmann scored his second of the game to send Calvin into the third period with a 5-1 lead.
Dubbink scored again for the Panthers in the opening minute for the final frame, but that was followed by a Kyle VanDusen tally to restore the Knight's four-goal cushion. Josh Hartlein and Jacob Sibenga added two more goals for the Knights, and while
Zachary Currie scored the fourth goals of his freshman campaign, it was too little, too late, as Calvin skated away with the 8-3 win.
WHO'S NEXT?
The Panthers will meet the Knights one more time this season, and it will be this coming Friday. Puck drop at Eagles Ice Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
