MIDLAND, Mich. - In comeback fashion, the Davenport baseball team captured Game 1 on Friday by a final score of 6-5 and then could not carry that momentum into Game 2 and lost 11-2.
In the first game, Davenport faced a 5-2 deficit in the seven-inning affair heading into the top of the seventh. The Timberwolves trailed 2-0 after two innings but then scored the next five runs. It all started with a one-out walk to
Nolan Bryant which was followed by a single from
Nolan Anspaugh.
Noah Marcoux worked a walk to load the bases and NU's starting pitcher Logan Lee was lifted from the game. Jake Jekielek entered for the Timberwolves and plunked
Carson Eby to force in a run as DU trailed 5-3.
Travis Harvey followed with a clutch two-run single to right field to tie the game at 5.
Kamrin Markwardt battled and also drew a walk to once again load the bases with one out.
Anthony Aloisio reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop and the play was made at third base as the winning run crossed home plate.Â
James Rogers got the start and no decision going 5.1 innings and allowing eight hits and five runs. He walked three and struck out five.
Max Swan needed to pitch just 2/3 of an inning to get the win (1-1) entering in relief in the sixth inning.
Cal Djuraskovic earned his sixth save of the season with a dominant bottom of the seventh. He got a lineout to second and then back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. Harvey went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run to give him nine multi-hit games this season. Anspaugh also went 2-for-4 as DU collected eight hits, all singles, against Northwood pitching.
Northwood did not let that Game 1 letdown affect them in Game 2 as they pounced on the Panthers to the tune of 11-2. Davenport's defense was a key to the big deficit with four errors. The third inning in particular did them in as NU scored seven times on just four hits with three errors.
James Kohl allowed just one earned run among those seven runs in the inning. Kohl took his first loss of the season (4-1) and allowed three hits with two walks. The big blow in the third came off the bat of Khale Showers who hit a grand slam off
Joseph Drury who replaced Kohl in the third.
Davenport's runs came with one in the first and another in the third.
Carson Eby had a RBI single in the first and
Noah Marcoux hit a solo homer in the third. It gave him six long balls for the season and tied him for the GLIAC lead. No more scoring occurred after the fourth inning and the DU bullpen got solid efforts from
Isaac Van Dyke and
Duncan Gillett. Van Dyke went 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts. Gillett tossed three innings and did not allow a run for the first time in his last three outings. Gillett allowed two hits and walked two with five strikeouts (new career-high).Â
Derek Clark improved to 5-1 for Northwood on the mound and went the distance of nine innings. He allowed eight hits and walked one with eight strikeouts. Cole Brooks went 4-for-5 with a double and triple for NU in Game 2. Marcoux went 2-for-4 as did Anspaugh for the Panthers. Eby finished the game 2-for-3.Â
