ST. CHARLES, Mo. - If you look up the definition of resiliency, you would probably see the Davenport baseball team photo. The Panthers facing elimination on Saturday in the NCAA Midwest Regional refused to give in against a talented Quincy club. The Hawks held two separate five-run leads after the top of the first inning (5-0) and top of the fourth inning (11-6), but Davenport did not waver taking a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the second and later taking the lead 12-11 after three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

This incredible collegiate baseball game featured 35 runs and 38 hits between the two teams. Quincy allowed all 22 runs to the Panthers as earned runs. The Panthers belted the ball for 23 hits which included four doubles, a triple and home runs by Travis Harvey and Ben Mets. Harvey's two-run jack in the second inning gave DU a 6-5 lead. Mets' three-run bomb in the fourth cut the deficit to 11-9.

Harvey went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and that home run. He drove in three runs and scored four times. Mets continued his stellar hitting going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a team-high five RBI (both season highs in runs and RBI).

The turning point in the contest happened in the top of the seventh. Quincy tied the game at 12 with two outs and Dalton O'Boyle came into pitch for DU. He replaced Spencer Vainavicz who did amazing work out of the bullpen. O'Boyle walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and the next hitter was ahead 3-1 in the count. O'Boyle loaded the count with a fastball and then the hitter fouled off the first full count pitch. The next pitch was hit up the middle and second baseman Nolan Bryant made a great play to get to the ball and Noah Marcoux scooped the ball at first base to end the threat.

Davenport then put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kamrin Markwardt walked with the bases loaded for the 13-12 lead. Mets singled home a run followed by Bryant's infield single and Gaetano Vallone's sacrifice fly for a 16-12 lead. Nolan Anspaugh singled home a run through the left side and Christian Petre had a RBI single up the middle for the six-run cushion.

The Panthers weren't done with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Harvey tripled to lead it off and Anthony Aloisio reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop as Harvey beat the throw home. Mets followed with a RBI single and Bryant with a RBI double for a 21-13 lead. Anspaugh's RBI single up the middle scored Bryant with the 22nd and final run for Davenport.

The Panthers will now await their next opponent tomorrow. Trevecca Nazarene and Northwood are playing the late game at press time.
