1/24/2022 12:23:00 PM

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing a game postponed from Jan. 10, the Davenport University men's basketball team will be at Grand Valley State on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. tip against the Lakers. Playing just their third game of the new year, the Panthers are coming off an 0-2 road trip in the Upper Peninsula and will look to snap a current three-game losing streak against their crosstown rival.

•  Northern Michigan 91, Davenport 79: Jarrin Randall went off for a career-high 37 points, which is tied for third in program history, but Davenport came up short at Northern Michigan on Thursday, 91-79, the team's first game in over a month. Davenport falls to 7-5 overall, 3-2 in GLIAC play, 2-8 in the all-time series against the Wildcats, and 0-6 all time at Northern Michigan. On the other side, the Wildcats (8-8, 4-5 GLIAC) have won five of their last six games. Randall joins Avery Hudson, 32 points on Feb. 1, 2019 at Ashland, and Chris Rollins, 35 points on Feb. 20, 2021 at Northern Michigan, as the only Panthers with a 30-point game in the program's Division II era (since 2017). In the process, the Chicago native also set new personal bests for field goals made with 14 (14-for-20), which is tied for first in DU history, and three-pointers made with seven (7-for-12), which is tied for second in team history. Jairus Stevens was the other Panther in double-figures with 14 on 6-of-8 shooting in 25 minutes on the court. Luke Maranka brought down five rebounds, Rollins dished out five assists, Chaz Birchfield and Maranka each had a block, and Stevens notched three steals. Randall scored the game's first points with a jumper under a minute in, but that would be Davenport's only lead of the game. The second and final tie came at 12-12 before Northern Michigan led by as many as 14, 39-25, and took a six-point advantage, 43-37, into halftime. Out of the break, the closest the Panthers could get was four, 43-39, when Stevens hit a layup, but the Wildcats pushed the deficit back to 16, 85-69, before winning with the 12-point margin.

•  Michigan Tech 73, Davenport 61:  Looking to bounce back from Thursday's loss at Northern Michigan, Davenport was tasked with Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers trailed the Huskies by 10 at the half, 38-28, and were unable to climb out of that hole falling by a score of 73-61. Davenport fell to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in GLIAC play while Michigan Tech snapped its two-game losing streak to improve to 11-5 on the season and 7-3 in league action. The Panthers now lead the Huskies by just one in the all-time series, 5-4, and Michigan Tech has won the last two in Houghton. Jarrin Randall was at it again for Davenport as he followed up Thursday's 37-point effort with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting (3-of-7 3FG and 4-of-5 FT), six rebounds, two steals, and only one turnover in 38 minutes played. Chris Rollins was the other Panther to score in double-figures thankes to 12 points, but was held without an assist for the first time since Feb. 28, 2019 at Grand Valley State (66-game streak). Davenport enjoyed just two leads and both came in the first five minutes of the first half including 7-6 and 9-8. Once it was 9-8, Michigan Tech answered with a 15-2 run to take its biggest lead of the first half at 12, 23-11, and led by 12 again at 26-14 before heading into the break up 10. Out of the locker room, the Huskies pushed their advantage to as many as 21, 58-37, with just over 12 minutes to play. With just under two minutes on the clock, a Randall jumper pulled the Panthers within seven, 68-61, but the home team didn't let them get any closer.

•  Scouting the Lakers: Grand Valley State has won three games in a row, four of its last five and all three of the team's losses have come by seven points or less, but all three were at home. The Lakers continue to be paced by one of the most complete players in the GLIAC in Jake Van Tubbergen. Van Tubbbergen is averaging a double-double with 17.6 points (fifth in the league) and 10.1 rebounds (first in the league) per game. Also putting up at least 10 points per contest so far for the Lakers are Christian Negron with 12.2, who's also bringing down 7.9 boards per outing, and Jordan Harris with 10.9. Harris is dishing out 4.0 assists per game, which is good for fifth in the conference. Nationally, Van Tubbergen is fifth in double-doubles with 10 while Negron is fifth in field goal percentage with a clip of 68.8 percent. The Lakers are tied for fourth in the GLIAC in scoring offense (78.7 PPG scored) and second in scoring defense (67.8 PPG allowed).
