Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers battle but fall short 2-0 against No. 4 SVSU

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team faced No. 4 Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon and the Cardinals scored two second-half goals in the 2-0 win over the Panthers. The first half was very competitive and both teams had equal chances to score. Woody Holmes got his first playing time at Davenport and made a couple of nice saves early in the match to keep it scoreless. His counterpart Nick Kay was likewise up to the task for the Cardinals. The Cardinals had six shots in the first half compared to five for the Panthers.

In the second half, SVSU was able to use their deep bench to give their starting unit a breather. The Cardinals got the all-important first tally in the 53rd minute. Ben Godden for Davenport was taken down in the defensive end and the play continued. Jayden Cameron carried down the middle and found a streaking Cody Miller on the left wing. He didn't break stride and scored from around 10 yards out to the lower right corner for his third goal of the season.

The pace seemed to favor the deeper Cardinals who got an insurance goal in the 78th minute from the league's leading scorer Jonathan Monney. Shiekh Manneh had the ball on the short right wing just a few yards away from the goal line and had space. He calmly dribbled forward a few steps and found Monney cutting to the goal. He flicked the ball near the right post into the net for his 15th goal of the season.

For the match, Davenport had seven shots including four on goal. Joseph Renner, Justice Sikkema, George Deveau, and Andrew Dykstra each had one shot on goal. Holmes finished with five saves in a solid debut. DU was blanked for just the fourth time this season and are now 5-7-3 overall and 4-4-3 in the GLIAC. They will conclude the regular season on Wednesday when they host Purdue Northwest on Senior Day at 1:30 P.M.
