CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport men's soccer team found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit at halftime on their home field on Sunday against St. Cloud State. The Huskies scored in the 29th minute on a goal by Nolan Pratumwon and later made it 2-0 on a penalty kick by Philip Caputo in the 34th minute.
Davenport regrouped after halftime and played like a team possessed in the early stages of the second half. They seemed to flip a switch and got a goal from
Matt Whelan in the 47th minute. DU had a corner kick and the ball was cleared out of the box by the Huskies.
Cian Quinn lifted the ball high and Whelan came underneath it and turned to shoot finding the lower left corner just inside the left post to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then the Panthers had two quality scoring chances off corner kicks as Whelan and Quinn both had headers saved by Gage Steiner. Whelan got the equalizer in the 64th minute on a great individual effort. He made a couple of moves inside the box and freed himself up enough to get a shot off from close right wing and it got under Steiner to tie it up at 2-2.
Faheem Patel had a strong shot on frame in the 77th minute but that was the last scoring chance for Davenport. The Panthers are now 5-5-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the GLIAC.
