MARQUETTE, Mich. - The men's soccer team made the pilgrimage to Northern Michigan on Friday afternoon and came away with a 1-1 tie against the Wildcats in GLIAC action. The two teams also played to a 1-1 draw back on Sept. 18 in their other meeting this season. Davenport remained unbeaten in their last seven matches (4-0-3) and are now 5-5-3 overall and 4-2-3 in the GLIAC.
The Panthers struck first on their first shot on goal in the 12th minute. There was a scramble for the ball inside the box and it bounced fortuitously from
George Deveau to
Faheem Patel. He struck the ball from the 18-yard line on a half-volley and placed it perfectly in the top right corner for his first goal of the season. It was also Deveau's fourth assist of the season.
The Panthers kept up the pressure in the next few minutes and had back-to-back shots on goal by
Justice Sikkema and
Ben Godden. DU would not put one on frame for the rest of the first half. The Wildcats created more chances in the second half and broke through in the 68th minute.
Keegan Gray was whistled for a trip inside the box and the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick. Tomasso Lami scored his fifth goal of the season as
Shane Marinkovich dove to his right and Lami directed the ball into the low right corner of a wide-open net.
DU would eventually get another shot on goal in the 76th minute by
Matt Whelan but it spanned a period of 50 minutes of game time between shots on goal for DU. Whelan had a chance in the 89th minute to put the Panthers ahead as he played a ball towards the goal. It didn't have enough pace on it however and a defender raced back and cleared the ball a few feet from crossing the goal line. Marinkovich had three saves for the Panthers in net. Davenport finished with 13 shots including five shots on goal.
