ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team trailed Grand Valley State by five points, 74-69, with just over three and half minutes to play on Sunday afternoon. The Lakers then scored 13 of the game's final 17 points to defeat the Panthers by 14, 87-73. Next up for DU is a rescheduled home date with Aquinas on Friday at 7 p.m.
Jordan Sterling played all but the final 18 seconds while leading all scorers with 21 points (7-of-13 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) to go with six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and not a single turnover. Sterling was joined in the double-figure department by
Marcedus Leech Jr. (18),
Jakub Dombek (11) and
Jeff Carrier (10).
Chaz Birchfield brought down a career-high 10 boards,
Luke Bara dished out five assists and Dombek blocked a pair of shot attempts.
Following three ties and six lead changes in the first five-plus minutes, Grand Valley State's Marius Grazulis gave his team the lead for good, 15-13, with a layup at the 14:15 mark. The home squad pushed its advantage to as large as 10, 26-16, in the first half before a 15-point lead, 57-42, at the 13:21 mark of the second. Davenport used an 18-5 run over the next nearly six minutes before the hosts held on in the end.
