BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's basketball team trailed No. 20 Ferris State by just five, 57-52, with 8:31 remaining on Sunday inside Jim Wink Arena. However, the Bulldogs used a 9-2 run to go up by 12, 66-54, at the 3:22 mark and the Panthers scored just one point after that. Next up, DU will host Indianapolis on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Ellie Toney paced the Panthers with 13 points and was joined in the double-figure department by
Scout Nelson and her 11 points. Rebounding wise, three different Panthers brought down six rebounds apiece including those two and
Lillee Gustafson. Toney, Nelson and
Alexa Kolnitys each tallied a pair of assists while Gustafson and
Makenna Bryant secured two steals each.
Davenport trailed by nine at halftime after shooting 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from the field compared to Ferris State's 59.1 percent (13-of-22). From behind the arc alone, the Panthers made two of their 15 attempts while the Bulldogs converted six of their eight. Out of the intermission, DU cut the deficit to three twice thanks to a Toney free throw at 5:33 (40-37) and
Mary Liedel jumper at 2:35 (46-43). However, the visitors could never get any closer than that as they were outscored 12-8 in the final period.
