GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's basketball team trailed Indianapolis by four, 34-30, on Wednesday night before outscoring the Greyhounds 39-29 in the second half for the six-point victory, 69-63. The win moved the Panthers back above the .500 mark overall at 5-4 before they'll travel to the top-ranked team in the nation, Grand Valley State, on Sunday for a 1 p.m. opening tip.
Scout Nelson and
Mary Liedel each tied the game high in points with 13 while
Lillee Gustafson (pictured) secured the sixth double-double of her career (10 points, 15 rebounds) and
Makenna Bryant added 10 points as well.
Ellie Toney also brought down 12 boards to go with her eight points, Nelson dished out three assists, Gustafson blocked a pair of shots, and Bryant tallied a pair of steals.
Davenport led for the entirety of the first quarter and was up by as many as eight in those 10 minutes, 16-8. Indianapolis didn't take it's first lead of the game until the 3:57 mark of the second when it was 24-22. From there until halftime, the game would see another tie at 30-30 and four more lead changes.
Out of the intermission, the Greyhounds pushed their advantage all the way up to eight, 43-35, before the Panthers ended the third quarter with a 12-4 run to knot up the score at 47-47. The first bucket of the final period was scored by a DU player when
Ryan Harvey made a layup and the hosts didn't look back. They would stretch the margin to as many as eight at both 67-59 and 69-61 before the final six-point spread.
