INDIANAPOLIS - The reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year,
Anna Glynn (9 goals), and newcomer,
Ayanna Turrubiates (8 goals), combined to score 17 times as Davenport won a third-straight season opener, this time defeating Frostburg State, 18-7, in the Panthers' first-ever meeting with the Bobcats. Next up, Davenport will stay in Indianapolis to face McKendree on Sunday with the opening faceoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
Glynn fired 15 of Davenport's 41 shots (42-19 team advantage), 13 of which were on goal, while Turrubiates (transfer from Indianapolis), who was playing in the same stadium she last played a game in, uncorked 12 attempts including nine on target. The 2021 GLIAC Attacker of the Year,
Aaliyah Miller, was responsible for the Panthers' 18th score while finishing with six shots and three shots on goal. DU's eight other shots came from
Avery Garant (3),
Heaven-Lee Nichols (3) and
Reilly Noble (2) while Glynn and Noble each tallied an assist.
Defensively, 2021 Second-Team All-GLIAC performer,
Maddy Haynes, picked up right where she left off as she led the Panthers in both ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (5).
Christine Steffes (2) and Miller (2) also notched multiple caused turnovers. In goal, Maryville transfer,
Maisy Latus, made her first career start and appearance with five saves between the pipes.
Davenport opened the scoring with the game's first three goals, five of its first six and led by five, 7-2, at halftime. In the third quarter, the Panthers were outscored, 4-3, and their lead was just four, 10-6, heading into the fourth and final period. There, DU pulled away with eight scores to FSU's one and four of those eight goals came from the stick of Turrubiates.
