AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team started their spring break trip to Florida on a high note with a 15-5 win over Findlay on Sunday. It started off a little rough as the Oilers scored three times in the top of the first off starter
Dalton O'Boyle. Christian Orr had a two-run double in the inning for Findlay. The Oilers added another run in the top of the third as Orr had a RBI groundout to second.
O'Boyle lasted two innings and gave up three earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Carson Fischer tossed the next three innings and allowed one earned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Davenport got back into it with three runs in the bottom of the third. A wild pitch with the bases loaded scored
Noah Marcoux with the first run.
Carson Eby followed with a two-run single as
Ben Mets and
Cam Hart scored on the play.
Findlay scored their fifth and final run in the top of the fifth to extended their lead to 5-3. Ryan O'Malley had a RBI double to center off Fischer, one of six doubles by the Oilers for the game. Jacob Flaherty entered the game for Findlay to start the bottom of the sixth as the Oilers were ahead 5-4 after
Gaetano Vallone had a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The Oilers left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth as O'Malley struck out looking against Fischer. Davenport erupted for eight runs including four off Flaherty for a 12-5 lead. They had seven hits in the bottom of the sixth alone and the Oilers kept the inning alive with two errors. Eby had a RBI double to score Hart for a 7-5 lead.
Brennan Lux had a RBI single scoring Vallone off reliever Ben Calisto. Calisto allowed a walk and back-to-back singles before leaving the game for Ethan Canterbury. Marcoux had a two-run single up the middle to score
Nolan Anspaugh and Lux with two unearned runs and a 12-5 advantage.
Spencer Vainavicz got the win in relief (1-1) as he pitched the top of the sixth and struck out a pair of Oilers.
Alex Lord tossed a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts and then
Logan Bursick-Harrington had a scoreless inning of relief in the top of the eighth with a hit, walk, and three strikeouts. DU had one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to end the game in the eighth inning with a run-rule victory.
Cobe Huizenga scored on a double steal in the seventh and
Carter Troncin had a two-run single scoring Marcoux and Anspaugh in the eighth to end it. The Panthers improved to 3-5 overall while Findlay is now 1-5.
