Game Recap: Baseball |

Edington fans 11 and Clark gets the relief win in a 5-4 victory in 11 innings over Gannon

Edington set a new career-high in strikeouts in the no-decision going six innings

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team played well into the night on Sunday but came out with their second win of the day. DU beat Gannon 5-4 in 11 innings which included a late-night sprinkler shower in extra innings which halted the game briefly. Earlier in the day, they beat Findlay 15-5 in eight innings. DU is now 4-5 overall this season.

Derrick Edington had the best outing of his career in the start for the Panthers. He recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts which was six better than the previous high of five set on March 20, 2021 against none other than Gannon in 4.2 innings. Edington tossed six innings and allowed two hits and one earned run with three walks and those 11 strikeouts. Davenport pitching was overpowering at times as Gannon struck out 20 times against four pitchers. Spencer Vainavicz racked up two strikeouts in his one inning. Ricky Clark finished the game with three innings pitched and got the win (1-0) with two hits allowed, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Clark established a career-high in strikeouts besting his previous high of three in two innings back on March 6, 2021 at Quincy. The 20 strikeouts is also a new school record for a single game by the team.

Despite those gaudy totals, Davenport had to claw their way to this victory against the Golden Knights. DU had a three-run fourth inning which gave them a 4-2 lead. Gaetano Vallone had a RBI single, Christian Petre had a RBI double and Brennan Lux had a RBI single in the fourth. Gannon tied the game with two runs in the seventh as Ryan Kalbfus had a RBI single and Trey Zeroski drove in a run on a play that ended the inning on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

Davenport as the visiting team scored in the 11th inning off Joseph Reitebach for Gannon who took the loss (0-1). Petre led off with a single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff. After the next two batters were retired, Nolan Anspaugh reached on an error and Petre scored before Anspaugh was thrown out at second base. Clark finished it off in the bottom half of the 11th inning but Gannon put the first two batters on base. Kalbfus struck out and then Connor Rakow grounded into a double play to end it.

Caleb Anspaugh had a double and triple in four at-bats for the Panthers with a walk and run scored. Hart ended 2-for-5 with a RBI single in the first inning. Vallone, Petre and Lux also had two hits in the game. The Panthers will now play a doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 28 in Winter Haven, Fla. against Tiffin beginning at 2:00 PM.
