Game Recap: Baseball |

Trio of pitchers hold Tiffin to three runs in doubleheader sweep

Carson Eby had the walk-off single with two outs in 2-1 win in game one and Gaetano Vallone hit a two-run homer in game two during 4-2 win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team picked up their fourth and fifth straight wins and improved to 4-0 through two days down in Florida with a doubleheader sweep of Tiffin at Chain O' Lakes Stadium. The pitching had been in need of a couple strong starts and that happened with Jared Schwartz in game one and Connor Brawley in game two. Schwartz continued his fantastic start to the season by tossing six innings and allowing just two hits in a no-decision in game one. Schwartz gave up one run and walked three but got 10 flyouts and eight groundouts by the Dragons. He is now 1-0 this season with a 1.84 ERA in three appearances. He has thrown 14.2 innings (most on the team) and allowed just three hits (.061 opponent BA). Brawley took the mound for the first time as a Panther and turned in a memorable performance. He went the distance of seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Tyler Wehrle of Tiffin was matching Schwartz in game one and he went seven innings and allowed just three hits with no earned runs. He did not allow a walk and struck out six. Noah Marcoux and Nolan Anspaugh executed a double steal in the third inning to make it 1-0. Tim Orr hit a homer to right field for the Dragons in the seventh inning to lead off and Schwartz left the game. Carter Troncin came in and struck out the next three batters to extend the game. Troncin gave up a leadoff single in the eighth but got three straight groundouts to end the inning. Alan Meadows relieved Wehrle to start the bottom of the eighth. He walked Brennan Lux and then threw wild on a pickoff attempt as Lux moved to third with no outs and the winning run 90 feet away. Anspaugh walked with one out and then Scotty Adelman entered to pitch. He walked Marcoux to load the bases but then got a big strikeout for the second out. Carson Eby played the hero with the walk-off RBI single to left as Lux scored the winning run. Caleb Anspaugh had the only extra-base hit in the game with a double for the Panthers who had four hits.

Davenport got ahead 2-0 in the second inning as Gaetano Vallone launched a two-run blast to right field which scored Caleb Anspaugh who singled and stole second base ahead of him. Nich Green cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second and then Thomas Auth had a RBI groundout to second base in the third inning to tie it up. Christian Petre had a RBI triple to drive in the winning run in the fourth as Vallone scored after reaching a bunt single. Petre came in with the fourth run on a wild pitch. Brawley then faced the minimum over the next three innings before a one-out single by Evan Engle in the seventh inning. He got two fielder's choice plays to end the game for his first victory on the mound. Petre, Vallone, and Anspaugh each had two hits in game two.

The Panthers through 11 games this season are being led by Caleb Anspaugh with a .391 batting average. Vallone leads the team with 11 RBI and has scored nine runs. The team is batting .265 and has a team ERA of 5.28. DU (6-5) will face Eckerd (6-7) tomorrow night at 6:00 PM on their home field in St. Petersburg.
