Bats go cold in doubleheader sweep by Southern Indiana

DU scored just two runs in the twinbill and fall to 7-12 overall

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - If Davenport gained any momentum after yesterday's 12-4 win over Southern Indiana, it came to a halt on Monday as the Screaming Eagles beat the Panthers twice by scores of 3-1 and 7-1 (7 innings). DU has dropped seven of their last eight games and sit at 7-12 overall.

DU managed one run on eight hits in game one and one run on three hits in game two. Jared Schwartz had a solid start in game one but with little run support he took the loss. Schwartz went six innings and allowed five hits with two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Carson Fischer in relief gave up the third run in two innings of work and walked one with one strikeout. Trent Robinson gave up one run in the first inning for Southern Indiana but then shut down the Panthers over his final 5.1 innings of work and walked none with three strikeouts.

Ben Mets had a RBI single to score Noah Marcoux in the first inning of game one. Schwartz kept his team in the game on the mound and Davenport trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh squandered an opportunity to tie or take the lead. DU loaded the bases with one out and leadoff hitter Nolan Anspaugh at the plate. He went ahead 3-0 in the count but struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch for the second out. Christian Petre followed with a chopper to third and the fielder's choice ended the inning.

USI increased their lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Fischer gave up a leadoff single and fielded a bunt cleanly but fired to second base low to try and get the force out. The ball went into the outfield and the Screaming Eagles had runners on the corners with no outs. Evan Kahre with one out and the bases loaded reached on a fielder's choice and Lucas McNew scored from third for the 3-1 lead. Brice Stuteville got the save, his third of the season, in the top of the ninth. Anthony Aloisio had a pinch-hit, two-out single to get the tying run at the plate but Brennan Lux flied out to right to end the game. Gaetano Vallone went 2-for-4 and was the only Panther with multiple hits.

Stuteville then came out to start game two and picked up right where he left off. He went five innings and allowed just three hits and no earned runs. He walked two and struck out three improving to 2-0 on the mound. Ricky Clark ran into trouble early and lasted long enough to record one out. He allowed two hits and three earned runs with four walks and a strikeout in the first inning to put DU behind 3-0. USI added a run in the third for a 4-0 lead on a sacrifice bunt against Spencer Vainavicz. He tossed 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and three earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

Davenport scored in the top of the fourth as Lux had a RBI single to center which scored Carter Troncin. McNew had a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth off Vainavicz to increase the lead to 6-1. Troncin gave up the final run on the mound in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Lord pitched a clean inning in the sixth with three flyouts.
