QUINCY, Ill. - The baseball team was able to split a doubleheader at Quincy on Saturday to begin a four-game weekend series. Game one went to the Hawks 4-2 and then the Panthers got the better of Quincy 10-8 in game two.
Spencer Walker had a stellar pitching performance in game one for the Hawks. He tossed all seven innings to improve to 3-0 this season and allowed six hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out three in 97 pitches and also got 15 ground ball outs.
Derrick Edington likewise went the distance for the Panthers. He pitched six innings and allowed nine hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out five in 109 pitches and got eight fly outs and four ground outs.
Dayson Croes went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Hawks. Gino D'Alessio went 3-for-3 and had the other two RBI for Quincy. Quincy built a 4-0 lead after two innings and then Davenport got on the board in the third inning as
Noah Marcoux had a RBI single through the left side. DU added another run in the sixth inning as
Carter Troncin hit a solo home run to right center for his second long-ball of the season.
The offenses were hotter in game two and the Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a run in the first and four more in the third. Marcoux had a solo home run to left in the first.
Nolan Anspaugh had a RBI double and Marcoux launched another home run, a three-run shot to right. Quincy battled back with a run in the third and three more in the fourth to cut it to 5-4.Â
Davenport increased to lead to 7-4 in the fifth as Anspaugh had a RBI infield single and
Ben Mets had a sacrifice fly to score Anspaugh. The Hawks took a 8-7 lead in the sixth as D'Alessio had a RBI single and Luke Napleton hit a go-ahead, three-run homer to center.
Gaetano Vallone tied it up at 8 with a solo home run to right center in the seventh inning. Anspaugh put the Panthers ahead for good with a solo home run in the ninth.
Cam Hart added an insurance run with a RBI single to left for the 10th run. Anspaugh went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Marcoux finished 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.Â
Pablo Jacques got the start for DU and lasted 3.1 innings. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs.
Spencer Vainavicz pitched next going 2.2 innings and allowed three hits and four earned runs.
Carson Fischer got the win (2-1) finishing the final three innings. He allowed four hits and no runs with a strikeout. Sam Stephens allowed both runs in the ninth and took the loss (0-3).Â
