CALEDONIA, Mich. - After getting a split of four games against Northwood last week, the Davenport baseball team welcomed another talented team in Wayne State on Friday. The Warriors were looking to snap an eight-game losing streak to the Panthers, but the home team had different intentions with a 3-1 win.
This one was a pitcher's duel between a pair of seniors in
Derrick Edington of Davenport and Nicholas O'Dea of Wayne State. The Warriors got a run in the top of the second against Edington. Michael MacLean led off with a hustle double to left center and Chris Tanderys then walked on five pitches. Rudy Ramirez flied out to right center as MacLean advanced to third. Davis Graham then had a sacrifice fly to score MacLean. Edington did a great job of limiting the Warriors to just that one run.
The Panthers didn't really threaten until the bottom of the seventh.
Ben Mets walked on four pitches and then
Carter Troncin singled to left center on a hit-and-run. O'Dea then retired
Christian Petre on a fielder's choice and struck out
Logan Hylek.
Anthony Aloisio as a pinch hitter walked on four pitches to load the bases with two outs.
Nolan Anspaugh then lined out to left field on the second pitch of his at-bat.
Spencer Vainavicz replaced Edington to start the top of the eighth. Edington had the longest outing of his season going seven innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run. Edington walked two and struck out six in 107 pitches. He has gone five-plus innings in each of his last four starts and has posted a 3.52 ERA with seven walks and 23 strikeouts.
Vainavicz walked the first batter he faced on four pitches but then struck out the next three to set up the bottom of the eighth. DU got a single by
Gaetano Vallone to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and then
Noah Marcoux battled before hitting a 3-2 pitch down the right field line for a RBI double to tie the game.
Chad Sommers replaced O'Dea but could not keep the Panthers off the board.
Carson Eby walked and Mets singled for the third time in the game which scored Marcoux for a 2-1 lead. Eby was picked off second base for the first out and then Troncin doubled down the left field line as Mets scored for the 3-1 lead.
The top of the ninth saw Vainavicz wrap up his third win of the season but it wasn't easy. He walked Hunter DeLanoy on five pitches but then got a big strikeout of MacLean on a 3-2 pitch for the first out. Tanderys reached on a fielder's choice but the close play at first looked like a double play which would have ended the game. Vainavicz then walked Ramirez on five pitches with four straight balls to put the tying run on base. He finished it with a strikeout looking by Graham on three pitches.
The three hits given up by Davenport tied a season low against Tiffin earlier this season. Strangely enough all three hits were doubles by the Warriors. The first seven batters in the DU lineup had a hit as Mets finished 3-for-3 with a walk. Troncin went 2-for-4 as DU had 10 hits in the game.
