CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team out-hit Wayne State 10-5 on Saturday, but a few costly base running miscues and untimely hitting led to a 3-2 loss to the Warriors to even up the weekend series at a game apiece. The Panthers scored first in the third inning as
Caleb Anspaugh had an infield single to third and came around to score on a
Nolan Anspaugh RBI double. Nolan reached third with two outs but wandered off the bag and was picked off to end the inning.
Wayne State scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth off
Carter Troncin who had a superb start in his first start of the season. Troncin walked Chris Tanderys to start the inning but then got a strikeout of Michael MacLean. Hunter DeLanoy had an excuse-me single down the left field line as Tanderys went to second base. Jacob Finkbeiner then hit a grounder just behind the second base bag and looked like a potential double play ball. It was bobbled by
Brock Henley and everyone was safe. A wild pitch allowed Tanderys to score and everyone else to move up a base. Rudy Ramirez then had a sacrifice fly to center to score DeLanoy for a 2-1 lead.
Carson Fischer came into pitch in the sixth inning with two outs and got Ramirez to strike out and strand a runner on first. Troncin finished with a no-decision going 5.2 innings and allowing four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Davenport had base runners on each of their last four at-bats and trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning had a golden opportunity to score. They loaded the bases after three walks to
Christian Petre,
Caleb Anspaugh, and
Nolan Anspaugh.
Gaetano Vallone unfortunately struck out looking on a 2-2 pitch to end the threat.
Wayne State took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth and Chad Sommers took the mound looking for the save.
Caleb Anspaugh doubled to lead off the inning and
Nolan Anspaugh doubled him home with one out to cut it to 3-2. Nolan was then picked off second base with Vallone at the plate for the second out and Vallone hit a fly ball to center to end the game.
Nolan Anspaugh went 4-for-4 at the dish with three doubles and two RBI.
Caleb Anspaugh went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Noah Marcoux went 2-for-3 with a walk. Karter Fitzpatrick for the Warriors improved to 4-0 on the mound going 6.1 innings but walked five and only struck out one. Brennan Cox was solid in relief with 1.2 innings and allowed a hit with two walks and three strikeouts. These two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon to conclude the weekend series.
