Men's Volleyball

Meet Your 2021-22 Men's Volleyball Newcomers

Kapeli Moala - #13 - Freshman - 6'4" OH from Mishawaka, Ind.

How long have you been playing volleyball?
"I started officially playing competitive volleyball two years ago. I was self taught and I watched how the professionals would play and learned as I played. My little sister also plays volleyball and I learned some through her. This is my first year getting coached and playing volleyball at the next level."

Why Davenport University?
"I chose Davenport University because they invested their time in me. They were consistent and persistent in attending to my needs and making sure I was more than satisfied. I also decided to come to DU because of coach Padley and my initial interaction with my teammates."

What is your favorite non-sport specific hobby?
"One of my passions in life is singing. Before volleyball, I've always wanted to be a singer and I love playing the ukulele."

Coach Padley Gallagher's thoughts:
"Kapeli is going to be a force to be reckoned with as an outside hitter in our conference. He is a hard worker and a great teammate. He always works to be the best version of himself and is constantly trying to improve not only himself but those around him. We couldn't be more excited to have Kapeli join us at Davenport men's volleyball."

Liam Schallhorn - #4 - Freshman 6'4' MB from Holland, Mich.

How long have you been playing volleyball?
"I had a background in playing club volleyball when I was seven years old and when there was an opportunity to play volleyball, even just for fun, I would take it." Fun fact: Liam was on one of the first Michigan high school boys volleyball teams at West Ottawa High School!"

Why Davenport University?
"I chose DU for the programs it has and also because it's not too far from home."

What is your favorite non-sport specific hobby?
"For a hobby, I like to garden. I think it's really peaceful."

Coach Padley Gallagher's thoughts:
"Liam came to us having been an outside hitter in his younger years and has fit in very well as a middle this year. We needed a middle and he's gone above and beyond to learn his new role and has become very good at it. We are so excited to have Liam join our program."

John Pylman - #6 - 6'1 Senior OH/RH - Grand Rapids, Mich.

How long have you been playing volleyball?
"I started playing volleyball about eight years ago. At that time, it was in the sand, but after a couple years, I got invited to start playing indoor. After a particularly memorable tournament in which I beat Davenport alum, Nathan Vander Meer, I got invited to play collegiately with him."

Why Davenport University?
"At the time, I was going to community college and I had most of my gen ed classes done. The prospect of playing collegiate volleyball is what made me pick Davenport. I had never given thought to playing indoor at that level until it was offered to me."

What is your favorite non-sport specific hobby?
"My favorite non-sport specific hobby would be a tie between billiards, weightlifting/working out, or traveling to new places!"

Coach Padley Gallagher's thoughts:
"John re-joins this team as a former Davenport men's volleyball player. He played a few years back under David Vander Meer while learning the indoor game. He is a great athlete and will graduate after this season, but we are glad he's here for this year."
