No. 11 Grand Valley State Pulls Away in Second Half

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's lacrosse team only trailed No. 11 Grand Valley State by one goal, 8-7, at halftime on Saturday morning at the DU Turf Field. However, the Lakers would go on to outscore the Panthers by eight, 10-4, in the second half to defeat the home team with a final score of 18-11. Next up for DU is Senior Day and the final match of the regular season on Friday against Northern Michigan at 3 p.m.

Davenport fell to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in GLIAC play while Grand Valley State (15-1, 7-0 GLIAC) gave up double-digit goals for just the third time this season, all of which have come on the road for the Lakers.

Ayanna Turrubiates (pictured) scored a team-high four goals, just one off the game high, and did so on 10 shots, eight of which were on goal. Also breaking into the goal column for Davenport were Maddy Haynes (2), Anna Glynn (2), Aaliyah Miller (2), and Blakely Malpass (1). The Panthers' three assists came from Haynes (2) and Glynn.

Four different players notched multiple ground balls including Maisy Latus in goal with three, Haynes (2), Christine Steffes (2), and Hannah Medina (2), who made her first start as a Panther. Defensively, Haynes (2 caused turnovers), Steffes (2) and Elizabeth Robinson (1) each caused a turnover while Latus saved seven shots on 35 faced, the second-most attempts she's seen this spring, second only to the 41 at No. 2 Indianapolis on March 6.

In the team head-to-head, the Panthers were very good in the clear with 19 successful clears in their 20 tries while the Lakers went 14-for-16 in that category. Davenport also had fewer turnovers (11-12) while the ground balls were knotted up at 14-14. Grand Valley State racked up 35 shots to Davenport's 24, including 25-19 in shots on target, and also controlled the draw to the tune of 22-11. Miller was the Panthers' indivdual leader in that category with six.
