CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team had a doubleheader split on Sunday against Wayne State highlighted by
Christian Petre's walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth in a 5-4 win in game one. The Warriors took game two breaking a 1-1 tie with five runs in the seventh inning for a 6-1 win. The Panthers are now 14-17 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.
Davenport built a 3-0 lead in game one before the Warriors scored four straight to take their first lead in the top of the sixth. The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and then won it in the bottom of the eighth.
Gaetano Vallone drove in the first two runs with a sacrifice bunt in the first and then doubled down the right field line in the third.
Nolan Anspaugh scored on both of those plays.
Carson Eby also had a RBI groundout in the third to score Vallone for the 3-0 lead.
Wayne State got a Jacoby Dale RBI double in the fourth to get on the board. The bottom of their order struck in the fifth as Brett Zimmerman had a RBI single from the eight spot and Noah Miller followed with a RBI single to right to tie the game at 3. Rudy Ramirez gave the Warriors the lead in the sixth with a RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Panthers tied it up at 4 in the bottom of the sixth as Petre hit a shallow fly ball to right and
Ben Mets standing at third bluffed coming home. That forced Hunter DeLanoy to throw home and it short-hopped Zimmerman who could not keep it close and Mets scurried home.
Noah Marcoux singled to left to start the eighth inning.
Ben Mets with one out singled to left center to put Marcoux in scoring position. Petre with two down on a 2-2 pitch squeaked the ball through the left side of the infield. Marcoux hustled around third and the throw from left was just late as Marcoux slid home to set off the celebration.
Nolan Anspaugh went 3-for-4 with two runs and a triple. Mets went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. Seth Marano went the distance for Wayne State and tossed 125 pitches in 7.2 innings. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts.
Ricky Clark got the win as the fourth hurler for Davenport improving to 2-1. He allowed two hits and no runs in 2.1 innings and struck out two.
In game two, Ryan Korolden of WSU and
Jared Schwartz of DU battled it out throwing up zeros through the first four innings. Wayne State broke through in the fifth with a run as Dale had a RBI single with two outs. DU tied the game up at 1 in the bottom of the sixth as Vallone had a RBI single to right with two outs and
Brock Henley scored on the play. The Panthers stranded runners on second and third after a Marcoux grounder ended the inning.
Pablo Jacques replaced Schwartz to start the seventh inning. Schwartz went six innings and allowed just four hits and one run with three walks and six strikeouts. Jacques got the first batter out but then gave up a single to Noah Miller. Miller took second on a passed ball and Dale drew a walk. Clark was inserted on the mound but gave up a RBI single to Ryan Foley for a 2-1 lead. DeLanoy reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Dale for a 3-1 lead. The Warriors scored three more runs with two outs. Michael MacLean had a RBI single to right for a 4-1 lead.
Evan Maize entered on the hill and Chris Tanderys greeted him with a single to move MacLean to third. Maize then tried to pick off MacLean at third as he was leaning towards home as Tanderys was running on movement. He threw the ball away allowing MacLean to score and Tanderys came all the way home for the 6-1 lead.
Korolden (3-1) went the distance of seven innings and gave up five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Nolan Anspaugh went 3-for-3 in game two and was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader.Â
