CALEDONIA, Mich. - In a non-conference matchup on Friday, the visiting Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis won 9-1 over Davenport in the first-ever game between the two schools at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Indianapolis made some timely plays offensively and defensively and Xavier Rivas combined with three other relievers to limit the high-octane DU offense to just the one run on five hits. The Panthers had two singles in the first inning, two more singles in the second inning, and then did not record a hit until a leadoff single by
Aaron Cardoza in the ninth inning.
Indianapolis had a leadoff double by Brandon DeWitt in the first and Alex Vela singled him home for a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.
Derrick Edington then got three straight outs to end the inning. DU got singles by
Gaetano Vallone and
Ben Mets in the first inning but Rivas struck out three including
Carson Eby looking to end the inning.
Edington gave up another leadoff double in the second inning but left him at third after strikeouts of Jared Bujdos and Will Spear. DU scored their run in the second inning but could have made it much more.
Caleb Anspaugh led off and Caleb Vaughn dropped a fly ball in right field allowing Anspaugh to reach second base.
Carter Troncin had a gorgeous bunt single inside the third base line to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Anthony Aloisio had a good at-bat and delivered a RBI single on a full count and Anspaugh scored the unearned run.
Christian Petre struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch for the first out and
Nolan Anspaugh popped up a bunt in foul ground on the first pitch for the second out. Vallone flied out to right field on the first pitch and the game remained tied at 1.
The Greyhounds broke it open in the top of the third off Edington. They scored five runs, all with two outs, on five hits and led 6-1. Drew Donaldson had a RBI single in the infield to make it 2-1. The big blow came from Armen Torosian who cleared the bases with a three-run triple, his first triple of the season, for a 5-1 lead. Bujdos then had a RBI single to score Torosian for a 6-1 advantage.
Rivas cruised through the third and fourth innings and faced the minimum of eight batters into the fifth inning with two outs. DU had an opportunity to carve into the deficit as Vallone was hit by a pitch and stole second. He took third on a wild pitch and then Rivas walked
Noah Marcoux and
Ben Mets both on a full count to load the bases with two outs. Eby hit a sharp grounder up the middle but Donaldson at second ranged to his right and dove to glove the ball and force out Mets at second to end the inning.
Isaac Van Dyke took over for Edington in the fourth inning and kept Indianapolis off the board in the fourth and fifth innings. He gave up a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Vaughn had a two-run single for two more two-out RBI's and an 8-1 lead.
Rivas was taken out after five innings and would get the win improving to 6-0. He lowered his season ERA to 1.85 and struck out six to give him an even 100 on the season. It was the first start of the season however where Rivas did not struck out 10-plus batters. Brady Mundell tossed two scoreless innings and walked one with two strikeouts. Nolen Wolf and Cameron Ginter also threw one scoreless inning. Van Dyke finished with five innings under his belt and allowed five hits and three runs with a walk and four strikeouts.
