GARY, Ind. - A topsy-turvy affair on Friday in the GLIAC Tournament saw the Panther baseball team keep their hopes alive with a 12-8 win over Saginaw Valley State in an elimination game at U.S. Steel Yard ballpark. The Panthers rebounded from yesterday's 10-8 loss against Purdue Northwest which put them in this position.
Carson Eby had the game's biggest hit with the game tied at 7 in the bottom of the seventh inning. He launched a grand slam to left center field with one out to give DU a lead for good. DU's offense scored in seven of their eight innings at the plate but held off a Cardinal team that collected 12 hits against six Panther hurlers.
Dalton O'Boyle picked up the win as the beneficary of being on the mound when Eby hit his grand slam. O'Boyle stepped up as the fourth pitcher of the game for Davenport and went 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs.
Carter Troncin got the start and lasted four innings. He allowed four hits and just one earned run with a walk and strikeout.
Hunter Merillat allowed the grand slam for SVSU and took the loss (3-4). He struck out four and walked three in two innings and also allowed four hits and five earned runs.
Ben Mets had a double in three at-bats with a RBI.
Christian Petre had two doubles and scored two runs with a RBI.
Tyler Mosher went 2-for-4 at the dish and had a two-run homer, his first long ball of the season. DU walked 10 times in the game with
Noah Marcoux breaking the single-season school record with two walks today. Eby also walked twice before his grand slam.
Gaetano Vallone went 2-for-5 with a RBI.
Nolan Anspaugh set a single-game school record with five stolen bases and collected two hits in four at-bats with two walks.
