Game Recap: Baseball |

Panthers take two on Sunday for back-to-back GLIAC Tournament championships

GARY, Ind. - The odds were certainly stacked against the Davenport baseball on Thursday evening as they lost their opening game in the 2022 GLIAC Tournament. The Panthers couldn't change the past but they definitely looked toward the future and made history by winning five straight games to claim their second straight GLIAC Tournament title. The Panthers needed to beat Purdue Northwest twice on Sunday and managed to do it by scores of 6-4 and 2-1.

Isaac Van Dyke got the win in the first game of the day improving to 2-0. Spencer Vainavicz picked up his fifth save of the season by pitching the ninth inning. PNW jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning as Tyler Schultz doubled home a pair. DU would score the next four runs to lead 4-2 after three innings. Carter Troncin had a RBI double in the second inning and DU scored three times in the third inning. Noah Marcoux and Carson Eby each had a sacrifice fly and Ben Mets an RBI infield single.

Marcoux in the sixth inning with the game at 5-3 drew a bases loaded walk to end the scoring for DU. The Pride scored once in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly and could not get a base runner in the ninth off Vainavicz.

Evan Maize gave a brilliant pitching performance in the second game for all the marbles. He went 7.1 innings (longest outing of his career) and allowed five hits and just one run with no walks and five strikeouts. The game was tied at 1 when he exited and later Ricky Clark came in and got the win (4-1) going the final 1.2 innings and stranding the bases loaded in the eighth inning and runners on second and third in the ninth inning. Eby broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out solo home run to left field. Eby's home run was just one of three hits by the Panthers as Nolan Anspaugh and Troncin had the others.

DU (35-21) will now await the NCAA selection show tonight at 10 PM on NCAA.com to determine their location for the Midwest Regionals.
