CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team has been in this position before. Today the Panthers lost their first game of the NCAA Midwest Regional #1 to Quincy 17-4 and will look to show resolve starting tomorrow as they need to rebound in a noon contest against Northwood. The Panthers lost their first game of the 2021 Midwest Regional and then battled back to a regional finalist position. Last week in the GLIAC Tournament, DU lost their first game to Purdue Northwest and then won five straight to capture the championship.
The Hawks dropped their first game of the day against Northwood after leading 5-1 heading into the ninth inning. The Timberwolves scored the next nine runs of the game with three home runs accounting for four runs to tie it in the ninth and five more runs in the top of the 12th inning to pick up the comeback win. Quincy did not let that loss bother them as they pounded out 24 hits, five more than the previous high of 19 given up by DU at Embry-Riddle back on Mar. 2. The Hawks scored first in the second inning on a Nolan Wosman home run. They added another run in the third inning on a RBI groundout by Lance Logsdon.
The Panthers tied it up in the bottom of the third as
Gaetano Vallone had a RBI single to left and on the play the throw toward home plate was wild and
Nolan Anspaugh also scored right behind
Logan Hylek. QU responded in the fourth inning with a RBI single by Joe Roscetti and the big hit by Brock Boynton with a three-run homer to right field for a 6-2 lead.
DU trailing 10-2 in the sixth inning scored their other two runs.
Carter Troncin had a RBI single to right center and
Christian Petre had a RBI groundout to first base. The Hawks then scored three times in the seventh and four more times in the ninth inning.
Derrick Edington took the loss (5-5) for Davenport going 4.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and eight runs with two walks and three strikeouts.
Isaac Van Dyke and
Michael Lincoln also pitched out of the bullpen for the Panthers. Jay Hammel improved to 9-2 this season and went the distance of nine innings. He allowed 10 hits and four runs with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Hylek, Troncin, and
Caleb Anspaugh each had a double for Davenport. Troncin and Hylek finished 2-for-4 at the plate and were the Panthers who had multi-hit games. Quincy now will await the result of tomorrow's noon game between Davenport and Northwood. If Davenport can win that game, they would advance to Saturday and the Timberwolves would play Quincy at 4 PM.
