Panthers stay alive in NCAA Midwest Regional with 8-7 thriller over Northwood

Christian Petre had four hits including three doubles to pace the offense

CALEDONIA, Mich. – Trailing 5-1 after four innings, the Davenport baseball team showed once again that they have the determination and patience to grind out a come-from-behind win. The Panthers clawed back into it with three runs in the top of the fifth and then scored the last four runs of the game with a run in the eighth, two runs in the ninth, and the winning run in the 11th inning for an 8-7 victory. Facing elimination, Davenport now needs one win tomorrow against the winner of Quincy and Northwood to advance to the Super Regionals May 27-28.

Rhett Evans gave the Timberwolves a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run to left field which also scored Joey Johnston and Jacob Rybicki. Logan Hylek got one run back in the top of the second with a RBI single through the left side which scored Carter Troncin.

Matt Magno doubled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to give Northwood a 5-1 lead. Noah Marcoux had a two-run double down the right field line to make it 5-3 and then Carter Troncin bounced into a fielder's choice which scored another run.

Evans on the basepaths made it happen again in the bottom of the fifth. He reached first after being hit by a pitch and then took two bases on a wild pitch. On the attempt to throw to third, the ball got away and Evans scored for a 6-4 lead.

The Timberwolves increased their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth as Carson Longstreth singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a RBI single by Johnston. That was the last runs of the game for the Timberwolves as Ricky Clark and Spencer Vainavicz tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Gaetano Vallone had a two-out double to the right center gap in the eighth which scored Caleb Anspaugh to make it a 7-5 game. The Panthers forced extra innings in the ninth with two runs. Ben Mets had a leadoff double to right field and took third on a passed ball. Carson Eby walked and Troncin grounded out to second to make it 7-6. Eby took second on the ground out and then Petre had a RBI single to center to tie it.

Northwood loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Vainavicz got Blake Salamon to struck out swinging to end the threat. The Timberwolves had two runners on base in the 10th inning but a pop-up to Troncin at second ended the threat. DU got the winning run in the 11th inning with two outs as Petre laced a double to left and then Hylek had a bloop double to center to score Petre.

Vainavicz got the first two outs of the bottom of the 11th on a strikeout and a fly ball to right. Magno drew a two-out walk and then Salamon struck out to end the game.
