Taylor and Welke Lead Panthers Past Wildcats

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  Lindsay Taylor tied a career-high with 23 kills to lead the Davenport University women's team to a 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the DU Student Center. The graduate also tallied 13 digs, marking her 11th double-double of the season and the fifth in the last six matches.

Abby Welke also had a career day for the Panthers (11-13, 7-6 GLIAC), notching a career-high 12 kills to go along with three total blocks while swinging at a .281 clip.

The Panthers took the first set of the match 27-25 behind stellar serving, recording seven aces as the Wildcats (8-16, 5-8 GLIAC) struggled to receive the ball. Ola Nowak led the charge, registering three of those seven aces. Davenport found itself in a five-point deficit late (19-14). However, DU then went on a massive 8-1 rally, spurred by a kill from Welke, gaining a 24-21 lead. Northern Michigan tied the set at 25 apiece but then had back-to-back attack errors to give Davenport the victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

With the second set tied 9-9, the Panthers reeled off a five-point rally to take a 14-9 advantage. Towards the end of the set, the Panthers held a 23-18 lead following a 4-1 run, which saw two kills by Emmy Webb. The Wildcats responded with four unanswered points to cut the Panther lead to one (23-22) as head coach Brian Netzler took a timeout. Emma Turnquist then closed out the set, slamming back-to-back kills as the Panthers won the set 25-22 and held a 2-0 lead.

Set three started with a blistering 5-0 rally by the Panthers, which was set in motion by a Taylor kill. However, NMU answered, winning the set in a nail-biting 25-23 victory over DU.

Welke slammed back-to-back kills midway through the fourth set to fuel a 4-1 run, putting the Panthers ahead of the Wildcats 17-11. Holding a 23-18 lead late, Welke struck again with a pair of kills to secure the 25-18 victory as Davenport defeated Northern Michigan 3-1.

With the win, the Panthers snapped a three-match losing streak to the Wildcats, with their last victory coming on Sept. 19, 2021, in Marquette, Mich, where they downed the Wildcats 3-1.

Webb finished the day with 11 kills and a .290 hitting percentage, while Turnquist added 10 kills and four total blocks for Davenport. Nicole Odeen ended with a season-high 53 assists, two shy of tying her career-best (55).

Defensively, Stephanie Kalinowski tallied a team-high 25 digs as she has now recorded double-digit digs in 22 straight matches.
