Panthers finish 15s season undefeated in victory over AIC

Written By Nicole Carvalho, Rugby Contributor

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Davenport University women's rugby played against American International College in an impressive 64-17 victory for their final NIRA match of the 15's season. The win marked their sixth consecutive to mark a perfect 6-0 record overall.

The Panthers entered the Yellow Jackets' home field with a determined mindset as the Panthers controlled the ball in the earlier portions, executing swift passes from one sideline to the other. However, the Yellow Jackets brought a strong defense that initially prevented the Panthers from gaining ground. At the two-minute mark of the scrum-half, Ashley Cowdrey exhibited remarkable agility, evading the Yellow Jackets' defense with impressive side steps, leaving three Yellow Jackets behind and scoring the first try for the Panthers - hir first of 17 points she tallied throughout the game. Her outstanding performance earned her the title of Player of the Match.

The try by Cowdrey seemed to calm the nerves of the Panthers, allowing them to focus on their skills. Despite multiple penalties called on both teams, DU continued to accumulate points, leading 31-5 by halftime. The second half remained intensely competitive with both teams refusing to relent. The game was physically demanding, characterized by numerous scrums and lineouts. This dynamic also provided an opportunity for the back positions to make effective game adjustments and execute strategic ball movement. A notable performance came from fullback Leilani Lepe, whose speed and skill enabled her to score three tries, one of which was a result of breaking through the Yellow Jackets' defensive line after a well-placed pass from Lionala Mayorga in the middle of the field.

The game not only showcased the Panthers' rugby prowess but also their unwavering commitment to playing with determination until the final whistle. This victory also marked the conclusion of the NIRA season and secured the Panthers' spot in the upcoming semifinals.
