Panthers Sink Lakers in Second Matchup of the Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Davenport women's volleyball team defeated Lake Superior State 3-1 Friday afternoon at the James Norris Center. Nicole Odeen finished the match with a season-high 46 assists to lead the Panthers (8-9, 5-4 GLIAC) in the victory.

After dropping the first set 25-15, Davenport responded by winning three consecutive sets to defeat the Lakers (4-13, 3-6 GLIAC) for the second time this season.

Abby Alan slammed a pair of kills from Odeen in the second set to spark a 6-1 rally, giving DU a 7-5 lead early. Holding a one-point advantage late (19-18), Odeen dished out assists to Alan and Lindsay Taylor, leading to a quick 3-0 rally and a 22-18 lead. Taylor delivered the final dagger in the set with a kill, securing the 25-21 victory and tying the match 1-1.

Taylor recorded a kill followed by a service ace on the following play to help give the Panthers a three-point lead (12-9) midway through the third set. Abby Welke made an impact late, recording three of the final four Davenport points with three kills, all coming from Odeen, as DU won the set 25-19.

With a back-and-forth start to the fourth and final set, the score was knotted at 13 apiece. The Panthers then dominated the final stretch, ending on a 9-3 rally. Emmy Webb delivered the final blow with a kill off an assist for Odeen, giving DU the 25-18 victory and a 3-1 win in the match.

Alan finished with a team-high 13 kills, swinging at a .385 clip for Davenport. Taylor added 12 kills, seven digs, and three service aces, while Webb tallied 11 kills, two blocks, and three digs for the Panthers.

Welke ended the match with a season-high eight kills and 10 digs for DU, continuing to become more involved as the season goes on.

Defensively, Stephanie Kalinowski ended with a match-high 18 digs in the victory for the Panthers.

The Panthers will put a pause on conference play, heading to Hammond, Ind. for the Midwest Region Crossover next weekend (Oct. 13-14).
