The ACHA Division I men's hockey team at Davenport recently completed a two-game weekend sweep of Western Michigan and currently have a record of 11-3 overall. They kept their undefeated season at home going to 6-0 with ironically a 6-0 win on Friday, November 10 at Patterson Ice Center. The game was dominated by the Panthers who finished with 53 shots on goal compared to 15 for the Stallions. DU scored once in the first period, three times in the second period, and twice in the third period. Both goals in the third period were courtesy of the power play as
Jonathan Dubbink and
Brendan Bauer put the game out of reach.
Peter Stojcevski had two goals in the second period upping his season total to four.
Austin Melone scored the only goal in the first period at the 1:38 mark from
Keelan Saworski and
Ryan Blackburn.
Kristers Klavins also scored a goal in the second period at the 18:05 mark from
Taber Gutschick and
Branwen Pollett.
Kyler Lowden got his first career shutout win in net and stopped all 15 shots against him.
The rematch on Saturday in Kalamazoo was a tighter affair but the Panthers won 4-2 at Wings West.
Trent Benedict opened the scoring at 3:47 of the first period from
Tyler Kaminski. The Stallions tied it up at 5:31 of the second period on a power play goal by Michael Stein. Klavins scored his seventh goal of the season at 14:54 of the second period from Bauer to regain the lead.
The Stallions tied it up at 16:28 as Layne Brubaker-Egner scored his second goal of the season. The Panthers finished strong with two goals in the third period to pull out the road victory.
Noah Bradburn scored the winning goal at 2:46 from Benedict and
Mattix McMullen who got his first assist with the team. Bauer got the important insurance goal at 11:44 from Dubbink. Bauer scored for the eighth time this season and leads the team with 21 points. Davenport held a 40-29 advantage in shots on goal and
Sean Andrus played well throughout in net for the Panthers making 27 saves.
Next up is a big road-and-home weekend against No. 5 Adrian. The Panthers travel to Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday for a 7:30 puck drop and return home on Friday for an 8:35 puck drop at Patterson Ice Center. The Panthers are looking to reserve the recent trend as the Bulldogs have won the last 15 meetings.
