Panthers Open HARIBO Invitational with Double-Digit Victory

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Davenport University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Minnesota Crookston 82-72 on day one of the HARIBO Invitational.

Early in the first half, the Panthers (1-2, 0-0 GLIAC) went on an 11-2 run, which was capped by a three-pointer from Matas Deksnys, propelling DU to an early 11-5 lead. Luke Bara and Myles Belyeu each drained a three-pointer within 30 seconds of each other, pushing the Panthers to a 19-12 advantage with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

As the Panther lead was trimmed to one with 8:25 remaining in the first half, Marcedus Leech Jr. scored six consecutive points to give Davenport a seven-point advantage. Raishaun Brown scored the final basket of the first half as DU took a 44-32 lead into the break.

Leech Jr. nailed two three-pointers in a 30-second span to give Davenport its largest lead of the contest (20) with 14:52 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Jakub Domek stripped the ball from the opponent near the opposing free-throw line. The 6-11 forward then took it coast-to-coast and threw down a massive tomahawk slam over a defender, growing the Panthers lead to 22.

The Panthers controlled the remainder of the contest, not allowing the Golden Eagles (2-2, 0-1 NSIC) to get within 10 points.

Leading the way for DU was Leech Jr., finishing with a game-high 24 points, shooting 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-8 from deep. Belyeu added 16 points and six rebounds, draining seven of his eight free throw attempts. Deksnys poured in 15 points, all coming from three-pointers, while Dombek chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals.
