Panthers crowned as NIRA National Champions

Written by Nicole Carvalho, Rugby Contributor

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
The Davenport Women's Rugby team delivered a stellar performance against Lander University in the NIRA Division II Championship, clinching a remarkable 91-5 victory and securing the national champions title for the 15's season with a perfect 8-0 record.

Despite facing cold temperatures and gusty winds, the Panthers showcased their commitment from the onset. In the opening minutes, Carrie Coyer-Westerberg utilized her speed on the outside, notching the first try of the match. Unfazed by the championship match pressure, the Panthers played with confidence as they repeatedly broke through the Bearcats' defensive line to score multiple tries.

The Bearcats, with commendable tackling skills, attempted to apply pressure on the Panthers' offensive line, but the resilient Panthers remained undeterred. With challenging wind conditions, the Bearcats' attempt to kick for points fell short. The halftime score of 45-0 reflected the Panthers' unrelenting spirit and determination, emphasizing their commitment to giving their all on the field.

The second half witnessed an even more formidable performance from the Panthers. Scrum-half Ashley Cowdrey, who was named Player of the Match, stole the spotlight with four exceptional tries, showcasing her prowess in runs from midfield and strategic kicks over the Bearcats' defense. The synergy between Cowdrey and fly-half Aubrey Christ was instrumental, seamlessly connecting the forward and back lines and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Senior player Addy Ochoa also left an indelible mark with two tries, showcasing her speed, strength, and impeccable defensive skills.

The Panthers' remarkable game was a collective effort, with every player demonstrating unwavering commitment until the final whistle. Despite Lander University scoring a late try, the Panthers' determination prevailed. Their undefeated season and national championship title testify to their hard work, resilience, and skill as they transition to the 7s season in early spring.
