Panthers Comeback Effort Not Enough Against Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Jaylen Hodges poured in a career-high 20 points as the Davenport University men's basketball team fell 95-90 to Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (7-19, 3-13 GLIAC) faced their largest deficit of the game with 15:46 remaining as the Cardinals (13-13, 8-8 GLIAC) hit a triple to go up by 26 points. Moments later, Luke Bara made a three-point shot which began to change momentum in favor of DU.

Hodges scored on a layup to spur a 9-1 run, eclipsing 2:02 and trimming the SVSU lead to 12 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.

Trailing by eight points in the closing minutes, Jordan Sterling scored from deep, and the Cardinals lead was cut to a narrow 89-84 advantage. Chaz Birchfield drained a midrange jumper with 24 seconds remaining after Davenport stopped Saginaw Valley State on the other end of the court.

With their 26-point lead cut to three, the Cardinals held on down the stretch, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe over the last 22 seconds of action.

Sterling scored a game-high 23 points, which ties a career high, while also recording eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists. James Felton added 17 points, six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Bara finished with 16 points and five assists, while Birchfield grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Panthers will return home for their final week of the season, matching up against Ferris State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and senior day against Lake Superior State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
