GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team hosted Roberts Wesleyan in their home opener on a brisk and frigid afternoon at the DU Turf Field. The game featured goal-scoring runs by both teams before the Redhawks had the final run of the game in the fourth quarter to propel them to a 17-14 win over the Panthers.
Roberts Wesleyan scored the first five goals, but then the Panthers responded with three straight from
Sean Ryan,
James Johnston, and
Jayden Ashley. The Redhawks increased their lead to 8-3 early in the second quarter and the teams traded goals heading into halftime with RWU leading 10-5.
The big swing happened in the third quarter as Davenport trailed 11-5 but scored six straight goals to tie the game at the 4:10 mark. Ashley scored three goals during the run for the Panthers. The visitors from Rochester, N.Y. took control back of the game with five straight goals heading into the fourth quarter to take a 16-11 lead. Davenport would not recover from that run even though Ashley would score two more goals and Johnston ended the scoring with 4:11 left in the game.
Ashley finished with seven goals and one assist. Johnston recorded three goals and two assists.
Luke Eichbauer scored a pair of goals on four total shots.
Keelan McKouen had a goal and three assists.
Lucas Renzetti won 12 faceoffs and picked up six groundballs.Â
