HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team faced off with first-time opponent Alabama Huntsville on Sunday and fell 9-6 to the Chargers. The first half featured a low-scoring 2-2 tie with each team scoring once in the first and second quarter. The second half adjustments must have worked as the teams combined for 11 goals albeit with the Chargers getting just enough of those goals to get the win (3-2).
Davenport (1-3) opened the scoring on a man-up goal by
Keelan McKouen at 11:04 of the first quarter from
Adam Smellie. Kyle Light scored at 3:15 for UAH from Brody Phillips and scored again at 2:13 of the second quarter for a 2-1 lead.
Jayden Ashley tied it before halftime with 32 seconds left from
Sean Ryan.
UAH used a run of four straight goals in the third quarter to build a 6-3 lead. Light got his third of the game on a man-up goal and Pete Fabrizio scored twice including a man-up goal at 1:23.
Matt Firth scored with four seconds left in the quarter for DU who trailed 6-4.
McKouen cut the deficit to 6-5 at the 13:59 mark from Smellie and Smellie tied it up at 12:24 on a man-up tally from
Lucas Renzetti. Fabrizio scored the next two goals and Reid Vender wrapped up the scoring at 4:24 as the Chargers finished down the stretch to prevail.
Alabama Huntsville recorded 56 shots with 22 on goal while Davenport totaled 27 shots with 15 on net. DU turned it over 28 times compared to 22 for the Chargers. UAH also had a 10-8 edge in faceoff wins.
Daniel Milano went all 60 minutes at goalkeeper for the Panthers and made 13 saves. Max Keller on the other side of the field had nine saves for the home team.
