Women's Lacrosse Season Outlook

The women's lacrosse program will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Haley Schmucker who replaces Rob Harris after a nine-year tenure. Schmucker served as Harris' assistant coach for one year during the 2022 season in which the Panthers finished 13-6 overall and made the GLIAC Tournament Final. The team was nationally-ranked in March and posted double-digit wins for the second year in a row.

Schmucker is joined by Peyton Romig who is in her first season as well with the program. Romig had a five-year stint at the University of Indianapolis which was capped off with a Division II National Championship in the spring of 2022. Romig graduated as the NCAA's all-time career leader in draw controls (935) across all divisions and was named the 2021 Division II National Player of the Year by the IWLCA.

The team returns the services of junior attack Ayanna Turrubiates who was named the Davenport Female Newcomer of the Year. Turrubiates transferred from Indianapolis and led all of Division II in goals per game (4.94). The First Team All-GLIAC recipient racked up 89 goals, more than any other player in the conference and the second most by a DU player in program history. She also set school records for total shots (175), total shots per game (9.72), shots on goal (139), and shots on goal per game (7.72).

Anna Glynn who led the team with 104 points and started 18 games leaves a hole on the offensive side. Aaliyah Miller who was third on the team with 76 points including 41 goals will also be missed. Looking to increase their productivity will be sophomore Blakely Malpass who recorded 33 points including 26 goals as a freshman. The team was also dealt a blow when junior Maddy Haynes suffered an injury and isn't expected to play this season. She had 20 goals and eight assists in 2022.

Maisy Latus is the team's lone returner at goalkeeper and made all 19 starts in net for the Panthers. She posted a 11.96 goals-against average and made a total of 103 saves. The team will welcome nine freshmen to the roster for this season and will rely heavily on the underclassmen as DU has just four seniors.

The team will have something to prove as they were picked fourth in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The season gets underway on Friday, Feb. 10 with a trip to Quincy. The home opener is slated for Friday, March 17 against Indianapolis.
