FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The men's lacrosse team took on Indiana Tech on the road on Saturday in a very early start to the 2023 season. With temperatures in the mid-30's at the start of the contest, neither team really heated up the scoring column in the first quarter. The Panthers led 2-1 after the quarter with goals by
Dylan Day and
Jayden Ashley. Day scored at 14:01 unassisted and Ashley's first goal as a Panther came at 4:25 from
James Johnston.
The second quarter turned the tide to the Warriors who outscored the Panthers 5-2. The Warriors scored the last three goals of the quarter in a span of 8:52 including a rare man-down goal by Aran Heath at 1:30 of the quarter.
The third quarter belonged to Davenport as they took a 10-7 lead. DU outscored Indiana Tech 6-1 in the quarter and got goals from Ashley, Johnston, and
Keelan McKouen. Johnston's first goal at 12:24 was a man-up tally unassisted and he scored again just over two minutes later from
Luke Eichbauer with his first point as a Panther. McKouen scored a man-up and man-down goal before Ashley finished a hat trick at 4:47 from Johnston.
The Warriors were able to regroup however and play a stellar fourth quarter to pull out a 11-10 victory. The Panthers could not find the back of the net in the final 15 minutes while the Warriors got goals from Khanan Bodley, Heath, Nate Langille, and the game winner from Bodley with 1:05 left unassisted.
Davenport outshot Indiana Tech 40-36 and the Warriors made 19 saves as Kyle Twobulls had a great performance. Ashley led the Panthers with four goals in his debut while Johnston was all over the place with seven points including three goals and four assists.
Kaden Seelye on the back end led the team with eight groundballs and caused two turnovers. The squad is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 12 for a noon eastern start on a neutral field at Rockhurst University against Colorado State Pueblo.
