Leech Jr., Sterling Combine for 42 in Loss to Wildcats

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell short against Northern Michigan 81-64 Thursday night at the DU Student Center.

It was a battle between the GLIACs' top two leading scorers, the Panthers' (6-17, 2-11 GLIAC) Marcedus Leech Jr. and the Wildcats' (18-6, 10-4 GLIAC) Max Bjorklund, each averaging 20.1 points per game on the season. Leech Jr. led all scorers in the game with 25 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Bjorklund finished with a team-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists in the win for NMU.

The Panthers got on the board first as Jordan Sterling hit a shot from beyond behind the arc off an assist from Leech Jr. The Wildcats took their first lead of the contest 3:06 into the game off a three-point shot from Max Weisbrod.

Leech Jr. hit a layup off an assist from Sterling at the end of the half to help trim the NMU lead to 14 heading into the break.

After falling behind 62-40, the Panthers went on an 8-2 run which was capped by a Sterling dunk off a pass from Leech Jr. on a fast break to cut the lead to 16. However, DU could not cut the deficit back down to single digits.

Sterling stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals for the Panthers. The graduate student guard has totaled nine steals over the course of the last three games and has recorded three steals in four games this season. Chaz Birchfield chipped in with five points, six rebounds, an assist, and a steal for DU.

Davenport will return to action Saturday afternoon against Michigan Tech at 3 p.m. at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich. to close out its five-game home stretch.
