Fischer and Vainavicz combine to limit Nova Southeastern offense in 3-1 win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Davenport baseball team wanted to redeem themselves in game one of a three-game series at Nova Southeastern. The Panthers were swept in three games last year by the Sharks, but this time around it was strong pitching by Carson Fischer and Spencer Vainavicz along with early timely hitting in a 3-1 win by the Panthers.

All of the scoring occurred in the first three at-bats as Davenport scored twice in the first followed by the Sharks with one run in the first. Davenport then scored once in the second inning and that was all they needed.

Fischer gave up a sacrifice fly in the first but then shut the door for his next six innings. He finished seven innings and improved to 2-3 this season. He allowed five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. It was the second time this season that the DU pitching staff did not allow a walk in a game. Vainavicz picked up his second save of the season going the final two innings. He did not allow a hit and walked none with three strikeouts.

Carlos Rey took the loss for Nova Southeastern falling to 3-2 on the season. He allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings to go with four walks and four strikeouts. Danny Vazquez tossed the final two innings and yielded a hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Ben Mets had a RBI single and Miko Rodriguez had a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Gaetano Vallone had a RBI single in the second inning for the scoring summary. Mets finished 2-for-3 as the only Panther with multiple hits. He also reached base a third time with a walk. Rodriguez drew two walks and Caleb Anspaugh also had a pair of walks and scored a run.

These two teams will continue their three-game weekend series tomorrow again at 6 PM at NSU Baseball Complex.
