Panthers drop a pair to 16th-ranked Wayne State to open GLIAC play

DETROIT, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team was looking to get a clean start on Friday as they began conference play. The 16th-ranked Warriors of Wayne State had other things in mind as they swept a doubleheader against the two-time defending GLIAC champions. The Warriors have won consecutive games against Davenport for the first time in the series which is led 14-6 by the Panthers.

GAME ONE
Wayne State took the first game 4-3 in less than two hours. The Warriors scored the first two runs on a Hunter DeLanoy RBI single in the first inning and a Tony Hatzigeorgiou solo home run in the second inning.

Davenport responded with three straight runs as Gaetano Vallone had a RBI fielder's choice groundout in the third inning followed by a Caleb Anspaugh two-RBI single in the fifth inning. The tide turned in the sixth inning for Wayne State as they had three straight doubles with one out to take the 4-3 lead. DeLanoy had the first one followed by a RBI double by Rudy Ramirez and the game-winning RBI double from Chris Tanderys.

Carson Fischer (2-4) allowed those three doubles and took the loss going 5.1 innings. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts. Logan Bursick-Harrington got the last two outs via strikeouts in the sixth. Karter Fitzpatrick went the distance improving to 4-0 this season. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

GAME TWO
The Warriors did not need their bullpen in the second game either as Ryan Korolden was masterful improving to 2-1 this season. He gave up just three hits and a solo home run by Carter Troncin in the fifth inning. He walked one and struck out eight batters in 112 pitches. Logan Hylek had a double in three at-bats for the Panthers. Troncin also had the other hit going 2-for-3 in the game.

Tanderys had a big two-run scoring triple in the first inning and added a RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead. Troncin's homer in the fifth was responded by the Warriors with another run in the seventh inning. Ryan Foley had a RBI groundout to score Noah Miller. Ramirez scored twice in game two for Wayne State. Mason McGuire also went 2-for-3 with a double in the nine-spot of the lineup.

Isaac Van Dyke (1-1) tossed five innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs. He had five wild pitches and two walks with four strikeouts. Spencer Vainavicz threw two innings and gave up a run with two strikeouts. Bursick-Harrington made another one-inning appearance and retired all three batters he faced with a strikeout.

The Panthers (6-16, 0-2) will look to get back on track on Monday in their home opener against Parkside. The doubleheader against the Rangers is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
