CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team was glad to be home on Monday afternoon after 22 games away from the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex to begin the season. The vibes led to a 5-1 win in game one, but the mood changed as Parkside managed a 7-6 comeback win in game two for their first win ever against the Panthers in 14 tries.
GAME ONE
James Kohl (2-4) had his longest outing of the season going five innings and allowing just three hits and one run in game one. He walked three and struck out a season-high four hitters and picked up his first win since March 26 against Tiffin. His counterpart Caden Bronkhorst (1-1) did not fare as well going 3.2 innings and allowing eight hits and four earned runs. He walked four and did not strikeout a batter. In fact, Parkside recorded just one strikeout which came in the seventh inning.
Cade Kontny made a two-inning relief appearance and allowed no hits with a strikeout. The Rangers managed just three hits in game one with just one double from Bryce Inman for a RBI in the fifth inning. Davenport built a 5-0 lead before that point as
Carter Troncin started things off with a RBI infield single in the first inning.
Caleb Anspaugh later in the fourth inning had a RBI fielder's choice and then he and
Coltrane Rubner executed a double steal for the 3-0 lead.
Gaetano Vallone also had an infield single in the fourth inning and a throwing error brought home the fourth run from Anspaugh. Troncin got his second RBI of the game on a bases-loaded walk also in the four-run, fourth inning. Vallone went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Anspaugh and Rubner each had two steals and DU drew eight walks as a team.
GAME TWO
The sweep was looking good in the nightcap as DU led 6-3 through seven innings.
Khale Showers and
Coltrane Rubner each hit a solo home run in the fourth and fifth innings respectively as the Panthers trailed 3-2.
The Panthers looked to take control with four runs in the sixth inning.
Tyler Mosher was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 3. Then the big hit came from Anspaugh who unloaded the bases with a three-RBI triple down the right field line for the 6-3 lead.
The Rangers were able to get back into it off
Alex Lord, who tossed solid relief innings before running into trouble in the eighth inning. Lord gave up a single to lead off and then a one-out double. A walk to pinch hitter Max Bruff loaded the bases and
Logan Bursick-Harrington came in to try and put out the fire. Angel Rades had a RBI groundout and then Camden Kearney had the big hit, a two-RBI single to left to tie it up at 6.
DU got a leadoff walk by
Ben Mets in the ninth but Showers grounded into a double play and Troncin struck out swinging. Bursick-Harrington got the first batter in the ninth as Davenport was the away team despite playing at home. The game was part of the make-up date which was originally a neutral site game from Saturday in Detroit. Andrew Harris had an infield single and then Ryan Brouch played hero with a game-winning RBI double down the right field line as Harris scored from first. DU had been 13-0 all-time against the Rangers before the comeback win by Parkside. Anspaugh went 2-for-4 in game two and Troncin went 2-for-5.Â
Jared Schwartz got the start and lasted 3.1 innings. He struggled with command allowing five walks, but did strike out seven and allowed just one hit. Lord tossed four innings and allowed three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Bursick-Harrington (0-3) took the loss allowing three hits with a strikeout.
The Panthers will host Grand Valley State on Tuesday in a single game scheduled to start at 4 PM. DU has claimed six of the last seven wins in the series.
